Within the Sexual Minorities Archives, we use “literature” to broadly refer to all published print materials. This includes books, reference materials, and periodicals.
The SMA’s books and reference collection consists of more than 10,000 titles, including both fiction and non-fiction materials, which are cataloged by numerous subject areas. In the collection are books from the early 20th century to the present. The expansive reference collection includes guides, indexes, annotated bibliographies, dictionaries, travel guides, reports, publications from other archives, and other materials.
The Leslie Feinberg Library was donated to the SMA by Leslie Feinberg and Minnie Bruce Pratt in 2016. The LFL is a collection of 1,250 books which were the late author and activist Leslie Feinberg’s personal research library. The LFL has been catalogued by the SMA into a diverse range of subjects, from Marxism to Transgender Non-Fiction and more.
The periodicals collection, organized by title, includes over 1,000 periodical titles with more than 17,000 issues of newspapers, magazines, ‘zines, and printed copies of e-newsletters. The periodicals collections include pre-stonewall material, which dates to the early 1950s, up to present.
The SMA has a full run of some issues; for others we have an assortment of issues with some gaps and missing issues. If you are looking for specific titles please Contact Us. We have a list of all the titles in the SMA’s collection, as well as finding aids for several titles noting which issues are part of the SMA’s collection. We are happy to share these guides with researchers and visitors.
